History of The Hostel The hostel concept was established in 1912 in Germany by a teacher named Richard Schirmann. What began as converting regular classrooms into dormitories for visiting classes on lengthy trips has become a preferred economical, yet adventurous place of rest for travellers all over the world. Although hostels have come a long way since its founding, dormitory-style living has remained the standard layout. Most hostels today include private rooms for more privacy and comfort.
